Second Mile Screening to Ensure Candidate Qualifications

Mary Wagner, President & COO of Luttrell Staffing Group

Sophisticated identity theft and fraud by potential workers for manufacturing jobs have become an alarming problem across the country.  New technology used by fraudsters and the restraints forced upon staffing agencies and companies by the federal government by what questions can and cannot be asked to potential workers contribute to this increasing predicament.

While E-Verify, background checks, and personal interviews are helpful and necessary, they cannot factually determine whether personal information truly matches the candidates in question.

As a result, Luttrell Staffing Group has focused on what we can do to protect ourselves and our clients from those who engage in sophisticated age and identify fraud.

Therefore, to best inform and educate our clients, we would like to share our enhanced screening/rescreening procedures for individuals representing themselves as being 25 or younger or appearing to be 25 or younger.

  • Candidates must be interviewed without being accompanied by another person (unless required by ADA or as needed for translation purposes)
  • Verify their work history. Younger workers often don’t have an extensive work history, but we will diligently ensure we are working to verify what is provided and asking for professional references (teachers, coaches, etc.) when other resources are limited.
  • We are asking pointed questions about shift preference.  If we have a younger individual wanting to work in the evenings/night, we want to know why that is their shift preference.
  • For our younger applicants, we will ask what year they graduated or what year they completed their highest level of education. Does the timeline align with what their work history is telling us? We are verifying high school diploma/GED and/or last year of education completed.
  • Before extending a job offer, we will analyze the work history, education, background checks and any other information discovered during the interview to ensure the timelines align and are justified to reasonably prove this individual is over 18 years of age. We are utilizing work history and background reports to cross-reference dates, potential identity issues, etc.
  • As part of our onboarding, we have now added an age attestation that will only require the individual to list their date of birth (DOB) on this form, if they indicate they are under 18.
  • As a candidate is offered a position and submits an I-9, we will ask them to verify the information (address, birth date) on their identification presented to ensure they know their personal information without looking at their identification.  Additionally, the candidate must present a secondary document as evidence to support their age if they present as or appear to be 25 or younger.
  • We will be under contract with a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) approved Compliance Specialist who will further review and enhance any processes necessary to ensure we are placing individuals who are legally able to perform the work in which they are assigned.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas, questions or thoughts as we deal with this urgent issue of age and identify fraud.

Employee Spotlight

Kamryn Allen, Staffing Coordinator at Luttrell Staffing Group Greeneville

This month, we are excited to shine the spotlight on Kamryn Allen, a dedicated Staffing Coordinator at our Greeneville, TN branch.

Kamryn has recently celebrated her one-year anniversary with Luttrell Staffing Group, and in that short time, she has made an incredible impact on our community and the lives of many candidates.

Kamryn began her journey with Luttrell in August of last year as an Administrative Assistant. Within just four months, her exceptional skills and commitment led to a promotion to Staffing Coordinator.

In recognition of her outstanding performance, she was honored with Luttrell’s Annual Rising Star Award just two months later—a testament to her hard work and dedication. “It was so unreal! I did not expect to be recognized and appreciated so early on in my journey,” she shared.

A typical day for Kamryn involves checking in with her clients weekly and assessing their needs, as well as reviewing recent candidates she has interacted with. She emphasizes the importance of keeping both clients and candidates informed, ensuring that everyone feels supported. “The quicker you respond, the better they feel about trusting you to help them,” Kamryn explains about her approach to building relationships.

One particularly memorable experience for Kamryn involved a candidate who had just left a long-term job due to conflicts. Kamryn noticed his nervousness and took the time to listen to his situation. Within days, she found him a great fit, leading to an emotional moment where he expressed his gratitude. “He was so happy! He pulled me aside, started to cry, and hugged me, stating no one has ever cared for him in a work setting before,” Kamryn recalled. This experience reinforced her belief that being there for someone can make a significant difference in their lives.

Kamryn’s commitment to exceptional service is evident in her proactive approach to client needs. She maintains a waiting list for potential candidates, ensuring she is ready to assist clients when unexpected situations arise. However, she also faces challenges, such as ending assignments or informing candidates they do not qualify for certain positions. Kamryn overcomes these hurdles by offering alternative opportunities based on candidates’ skills, showcasing her dedication to helping others succeed.

To stay motivated and engaged, Kamryn incorporates music and self-affirmations into her daily routine. She believes that kindness, compassion, and empathy are essential traits for success in her role, and she practices active listening to ensure the best outcomes for her associates.

Outside of her professional life, Kamryn enjoys spending quality time with her family and traveling to new places, all while radiating her positive energy to those around her. Looking ahead, she is excited about expanding her knowledge and growing within Luttrell Staffing Group, which she calls the best company she has ever worked for.

Kamryn Allen exemplifies the core values of Luttrell Staffing Group through her heartfelt approach to staffing and her unwavering commitment to the community. We are proud to have her as part of our team and look forward to witnessing her continued success and contributions in the years to come. Thank you, Kamryn, for all that you do!
